Hm, I rather thought that the 'A heart exploded sentence' was somewhat on the mawkish side, and it almost ruined the whole piece for me.

Hey Rabbit, I stumbled on your blog via GWJ and it warmed the sh** out of my cockles for an afternoon. In response to your joy button, I also loved this article and made the following as a result before the style got all vogue and bandwagoned. I had planned to put them on sweatshirts for election season, but alas - I am lazy. You are on my list of favorite brains on the Internet, so thanks and I'll be keeping tabs.

Julian,

Firstly, great podcast. I've been a huge GWJ fan for about a year now.

Now to the dark side. On Jeff Green's blog, he basically spells out the horrific news of 1UP's sale to UGO and the layoff of 40 of it's staffers. Very sad day not only for these folks who now have to find a job in difficult economic conditions, but also to the fans of 1UP. Sam Kennedy, under pressure to put a smiling face on what amounts to one of video game journalism's darkest days, mentioned that 1UP will be the same, same content, etc. Jeff pointed out that 1UP can't ever be the same if you've let go of 1/2 of the talent that made it great.

Problem is, according to Kennedy, that despite all of these great efforts, 1UP was a money loser. UGO may have some capital to make 1UP a monetary success perhaps, but they've stripped if of it's soul.

I think UGO has it's work cut out for it having basically now to reinvent 1UP after possibly alienating most of it's fanbase by cutting it's talenting staff in half, sacking EGM and doing away with most of the podcasts...ie, everything we've known 1UP to be.

I'm not hopeful.

This article makes me think of my favorite line from "Good Will Hunting" - and it's how I feel at work everyday, knowledge is a bitch

Prof. LAMBEAU
You're right, Will. I can't do that proof and you can. And when it comes to this there are only twenty people in the world that can tell the difference between you and me. But I'm one of them.

While there's no doubt this guy can write...

I think he's horribly off base with stating that video games lack legitimacy. They've always been legitimate, meaningful works of creative expression. Jason, Rod and the like are helping to isolate meaning in their works and they're doing a great job of that. But to say that with these games, now all of the sudden we as a society should pay attention, is completely naive.

So yea... "Fuck you Fagone."

What are your thoughts on the use of the semicolon in a list of concepts/somewhat abstract objects? It's not what the semicolon was invented for, but it's an alternate use (that I find myself guilty of using on occasion.)

In this example, two parts of a sentence would normally be separated by a comma because they aren't both independent clauses. But the semicolon is inserted to avoid confusion between the first dependent clause of the sentence (the list) and the second (which could be mistaken as the final member of said list).

You could say I should just avoid abstract lists all together in favor of simplicity. But I find with some subject material, it's not so easy.

Just wondering your thoughts on this, probably a lame question but most would consider my love of grammar lame to begin with. It's just that with so many rules and exceptions to the rules...it almost makes grammar subjective.
